Review:
The TWSBI Diamond 580AL is a well-made piston-filling fountain pen. The pen writes smoothly, has a superior build to the TWSBI Diamond 540 that prevents the cracking issue that plagued the 540, and has a solid weight to it. It comes with a wrench and silicon grease; the former is for taking apart the pen (the nib, section, body, and piston can all be removed), while the latter is to lubricate the piston to ensure that it moves smoothly up and down the barrel. The TWSBI Diamond 580AL used in this review is the Lava Orange iteration with a broad nib. The ink in the pen is Pilot Iroshizuku Yu-Yake.
While this pen is well built, it can have some issues. If the piston is not lubricated, it may become stuck in the body of the pen when attempting to draw up or push out ink. Thus, ensuring that the piston is lubricated with silicon grease (which it comes with) is highly recommended. In addition, the cap of the pen can technically be posted on the back of the pen, but it does not post deeply and is prone to falling off. In addition, posting the cap on the back of the pen can make the pen extremely "back heavy," causing the pen to feel unbalanced when writing.
Despite some of the aforementioned flaws, the TWSBI Diamond 580AL is an exceptional pen its price. It has a solid feel and construction, is a piston-filling demonstrator, can be fully taken apart, and has a reliable and smooth nib. Further, TWSBI has a strong reputation for producing high quality pens at affordable prices for their customers, and the company also prides itself on taking advice from their customers through the company's social media pages.
Due to the aforementioned reasons, the TWSBI Diamond 580AL is recommended by Lion Stationers. It can be purchased from the following vendors:
