Review:
The Parker 51 is a unique and classic fountain pen that has historical value and a timeless design. The pen has since been discontinued but newer iterations have become more widely available. The pen can come with either an aero-metric or vacumatic filling system; the pen in this review has an aero-metric filling system, which holds slightly less ink than a vacumatic one. The pen has a unique hooded nib that remains a signature for the Parker 51, though it has been modified and mimicked by other pen brands, such as Hero (a Chinese fountain pen manufacturer).
The Parker 51 also possesses a slip-on cap that can be removed fairly quickly and easily. The cap has the signature Parker clip and can be posted rather deeply and securely on the back of the pen. In addition, the writing experience with the pen is impressive - despite this being an older version of the Parker 51, when it was cleaned with water and inked, it wrote almost immediately with no skipping. The nib writes smoothly (the nib on the pen pictured is a medium one) and the pen can go without use for over a month and still write.
The only salient issue with the Parker 51 is the amount of time it takes to clean due to the aerometric converter. To clean the pen, you use the same method you would to fill the pen - dip the nib of the pen ink water and squeeze and release the converter to draw water into the converter (as you would with ink). This can can several attempts before the converter, nib and feed are all devoid of excess ink. Hence, if ease of cleaning is a major issue for you, this pen may not be highly recommended.
Despite some issues with its filling system and cleaning, the Parker 51 is recommended by Lion Stationers due to its design, functionality and smoothness. The Paker 51 can be purchased from the following vendors:
